'Named and shamed' paedophile arrested

The original campaign caused outrage

A convicted paedophile has been arrested on suspicion of failing to sign the sex offenders' register after his picture was printed in a Sunday newspaper. Tuan Quang Ho, aged 25, was detained by the Metropolitan Police in south London on Monday afternoon and is being questioned at a south London police station.

His picture was published in the News of the World which "named and shamed" a number child sex offenders after Roy Whiting was last week convicted of murdering and kidnapping eight-year-old Sarah Payne. Detective Chief Inspector Bob McLachlan appealed for help in tracing other convicted paedophiles who the paper alleged had failed to sign on the sex offenders' register on their release.

"I would appeal to anyone who knows the whereabouts of Raymond Perkins, David Baron, Zia Asad Alowi and Warwick Spinks whose photographs were also published," he said.

'Public-spirited'

News of the World Editor Rebekah Wade has already defended the newspaper's campaign. She told BBC One's Breakfast With Frost programme it was "only right and fair" parents were told of any child sex offenders who might be living unsupervised amongst them. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott told the programme the tactic was "public-spirited". He said the paper had been more cautious than last year, when it published addresses of convicted child offenders, leading to "deplorable" vigilante attacks.

Ms Wade and Sarah's parents Sara and Michael Payne are due to meet Home Secretary David Blunkett on Tuesday to discuss Sarah's Law. The newspaper is backing the couple's campaign for a range of measures to be introduced including the ability of child carers to access details of any child sex offenders in their area.

Anyone who has any information about the whereabouts of the convicted paedophiles should contact the Metropolitan Police Service Child Pornography Line on 0808 100 0040 or the Metropolitan Police Service Paedophile Unit on 020 7230 3104
